3-Day Mikumi & Selous Fly-in Safari from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar

Tour Overview
This three-day fly-in safari combines the wide-open savannahs of Mikumi National Park with the vast wilderness of the Selous Game Reserve. Starting from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar, you’ll take short scenic flights into each park, maximizing your time for game viewing rather than travel. Mikumi is known for its classic East African landscapes and large herds of elephants, zebras, buffalo, and giraffes. Selous, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers a contrasting experience with its riverine forests, winding waterways, and abundant hippos, crocodiles, and birdlife. The itinerary blends traditional game drives with a tranquil boat safari on the Rufiji River. Accommodation is in comfortable lodges or tented camps that combine modern amenities with authentic bush character.
Day 1: Flight to Mikumi and Game Drive
Your journey begins with a morning transfer to the airport for a short flight to Mikumi National Park. Upon landing, your guide will meet you and drive you to your lodge or camp, where a welcome drink and lunch await. In the late afternoon, set off for your first game drive across the Mkata Floodplain, where herds of elephants, wildebeest, zebras, and giraffes roam freely, and lions may be seen resting in the shade. As the sun dips behind the Uluguru Mountains, return to your accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay surrounded by the sounds of the wild.
Day 2: Game Drive in Mikumi and Flight to Selous
Rise early for a morning game drive when wildlife activity peaks. The cooler hours are ideal for spotting predators returning from their hunts and birdlife in full chorus. After breakfast back at camp, you’ll transfer to the airstrip for your flight to Selous Game Reserve. Upon arrival, your new guide will greet you and take you to your lodge or camp for lunch. The afternoon brings a change of pace with a boat safari along the Rufiji River, drifting past hippos, crocodiles, and flocks of waterbirds, with the possibility of spotting elephants coming to drink. Enjoy sunset over the water before returning for dinner and your overnight stay in Selous.
Day 3: Game Drive in Selous and Return Flight
After an early breakfast, head out on a morning game drive through Selous’ varied landscapes, from open grasslands to acacia woodlands. Keep an eye out for wild dogs, giraffes, buffalo, and the park’s impressive elephant herds. Following your safari, return to camp to freshen up and enjoy lunch before your transfer to the airstrip for your return flight to Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar, where your safari concludes in the afternoon.
