3-Day Selous Game Reserve Safari (Fly-in or Road)

Tour Overview
This three-day safari immerses you in the untamed beauty of the Selous Game Reserve, Africa’s largest protected wilderness and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Travelers can choose a short scenic flight or an adventurous road journey from their starting location. Selous is famed for its vast elephant herds, thriving hippo and crocodile populations, rare African wild dogs, and spectacular birdlife along the Rufiji River. The itinerary combines classic game drives across open savannahs with a tranquil boat safari, offering close-up encounters with aquatic wildlife. Accommodation is in a comfortable lodge or tented camp that blends natural charm with modern amenities, set in a prime location to capture the magic of the African bush.
Day 1: Arrival and Game Drive
Your safari begins with either a morning flight over Tanzania’s varied landscapes or a road transfer through rural countryside and traditional villages. On arrival at the Selous airstrip or park gate, your guide will meet you and transfer you to your lodge or camp. After a welcome drink and lunch, there’s time to settle in before heading out for your first game drive. The afternoon light bathes the plains in golden hues, perfect for spotting elephants on the move, giraffes browsing treetops, and predators starting their evening activity. As dusk falls, return to camp for dinner under the stars before retiring to the soothing night sounds of the reserve.
Day 2: Game Drive and Afternoon Boat Safari
The day starts early with tea or coffee before setting off on a morning game drive. This is prime time for wildlife activity lions returning from a hunt, antelope grazing in the cool morning air, and vibrant birdlife calling from the trees. You’ll explore different areas of the park to maximize sightings, from open plains to wooded habitats. After returning for lunch and some rest, the afternoon brings a change of pace with a boat safari along the Rufiji River. Drifting quietly past hippos, crocodiles, and wading birds, the experience offers a unique perspective on the reserve’s wildlife. As the sun sets over the water, return to camp for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 3: Safari and Departure
On your final morning, you can choose between another game drive or a short walking safari accompanied by an armed ranger for an intimate look at the smaller details of the bush. After breakfast back at camp, there’s time to relax before your transfer to the airstrip or park gate for the journey back whether by flight or road arriving at your original starting point by late afternoon.
