5-Day Mahale Chimpanzee Safari

Experience an exclusive five-day safari in the remote Mahale Mountains National Park, renowned for harbouring one of Africa’s largest wild chimpanzee populations. This journey starts with a flight from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar, followed by a scenic boat transfer along Lake Tanganyika. Days are spent tracking chimpanzees with professional guides, exploring pristine forests, and enjoying lake-based activities, including swimming, kayaking, and relaxing on the beach. Accommodation is provided in comfortable lodges or tented camps, delivering an ideal combination of wilderness immersion and comfort.

  • Day 1: Arrival in Mahale Mountains

Begin your safari with a morning flight from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar to Mahale airstrip. Upon arrival, your guide will greet you and transfer you by boat along Lake Tanganyika to your selected lodge or camp. Lunch is served on arrival, and the afternoon is at your leisure, either settle in or relax by the lake before enjoying dinner and your overnight stay.

  • Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking & Forest Walks

After breakfast, embark on your first guided chimpanzee trek. The forested slopes of Mahale are abundant with wildlife, offering opportunities to observe chimpanzees in their natural environment. Return for lunch, followed by an afternoon forest walk or a swim in the lake. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

  • Day 3: Additional Chimpanzee Tracking & Lake Activities

The morning features another chimpanzee trek, providing further opportunities to study their intriguing behaviour and social structure. After lunch (picnic or lodge), the afternoon is open for swimming, kayaking, or simply enjoying the tranquillity of Lake Tanganyika. Dinner and overnight at your accommodation.

  • Day 4: Scenic Hikes & Cultural Experience

Following breakfast, join your guide on a scenic hike through the Mahale Mountains, with chances to observe diverse birdlife, butterflies, and other primates. Later, enjoy a boat excursion or visit a nearby fishing village for a cultural experience. Return to camp for dinner and your final night in Mahale.

  • Day 5: Departure – Return Flight

After breakfast, transfer by boat to the airstrip for your return flight to Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar, concluding your Mahale chimpanzee safari.
