6-Day Gombe & Mahale Safari

This 6-day safari offers a seamless blend of Tanzania’s top primate destinations: Gombe Stream and Mahale Mountains National Parks. Begin in Gombe, following in the legendary footsteps of Jane Goodall, as you trek through the forest to encounter chimpanzees in their natural environment. The journey continues to Mahale, a remote and visually stunning park on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, home to thriving chimp populations and beautiful landscapes. Your trip includes domestic flights from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar to Kigoma, boat transfers across Lake Tanganyika, and guided trekking experiences. Accommodation is provided in select lodges or tented camps, ensuring a comfortable and immersive adventure in Africa’s primate territory.

  • Day 1: Arrival in Kigoma – Transfer to Gombe

Arrive by flight from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar to Kigoma, where your guide will meet you for a boat transfer across Lake Tanganyika to Gombe Stream National Park. Upon check-in at your lodge or camp, enjoy lunch and a relaxed afternoon by the lakeshore. Dinner and overnight at your selected accommodation.

  • Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking in Gombe

Embark on your first chimpanzee trek in the forests of Gombe, with your guide assisting in locating and observing chimpanzees in their natural habitat. After lunch, take an optional hike to Kakombe Waterfall or unwind by the lake. Dinner and overnight at your lodge.

  • Day 3: Final Trek & Transfer to Kigoma

After breakfast, undertake a final chimpanzee trek or a birdwatching walk. Return for an early lunch, then board a boat back to Kigoma. Overnight in a Kigoma hotel or lodge, in preparation for your Mahale journey.

  • Day 4: Transfer to Mahale – Afternoon at Leisure

Breakfast, followed by a scenic boat transfer along Lake Tanganyika to Mahale Mountains National Park. Upon arrival, check in to your camp or lodge, set against the backdrop of forested mountains and sandy lakeshore. The afternoon is at your leisure: consider swimming in the lake or simply enjoying the surroundings. Dinner and overnight at your accommodation.

  • Day 5: Chimpanzee Trekking in Mahale

After breakfast, join expert trackers for a guided chimpanzee trek in Mahale’s forest. Trek duration varies based on chimpanzee locations, but the experience of observing these primates is truly exceptional. Return for lunch, then choose to relax or take a boat ride on Lake Tanganyika in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight at camp.

  • Day 6: Morning at Leisure – Return to Kigoma – Flight to Dar/Zanzibar

Enjoy a relaxed morning by the lake or a short walk after breakfast. You’ll then transfer by boat back to Kigoma and connect with your scheduled flight to Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar, concluding your Gombe & Mahale safari.
