4 Days Road Safari: Dar es Salaam, Mikumi, Udzungwa, Nyerere (Selous)

Day 1: Dar es Salaam – Drive to Mikumi National Park
Your safari begins early in Dar es Salaam, heading west along the southern safari corridor toward Mikumi National Park.
The drive passes through rural villages, roadside markets, and gradually opens into wide savannah landscapes. Upon arrival, you enter the famous Mkata floodplain, where wildlife is often visible immediately.
After check-in and lunch, enjoy an afternoon game drive. Expect zebras, giraffes, elephants, wildebeests, and lions commonly seen across the open plains, making Mikumi ideal for a quick but rewarding safari experience.
Day 2: Mikumi – Drive to Udzungwa Mountains National Park
After breakfast, you take a short scenic drive to Udzungwa Mountains National Park, a biodiversity hotspot known for its rainforest ecosystem and waterfalls.
The landscape transforms quickly from dry savannah to lush green forest, misty hills, and flowing rivers. Upon arrival, you check into your lodge near the forest edge.
In the afternoon, enjoy a guided hike into the rainforest. The trail leads through dense vegetation filled with monkeys, birds, and endemic plant species. The highlight is the Sanje Waterfalls, where cascading water drops into natural forest pools.
Day 3: Udzungwa – Drive to Nyerere National Park (Selous)
After an early breakfast, you depart Udzungwa and travel toward Nyerere National Park, passing through rural landscapes, plantations, and open bushland.
Upon arrival in the Selous ecosystem, you are transferred to your lodge near the Rufiji River. After lunch, enjoy a sunset boat safari.
The river is full of life, hippos in pods, crocodiles along sandy banks, and diverse bird species, including fish eagles and kingfishers. Elephants are often seen approaching the water at dusk.
Day 4: Full Game Drive – Return to Dar es Salaam
Your final day begins with an early morning game drive in Nyerere National Park, one of Africa’s largest and least crowded wilderness areas.
Expect elephants, lions, giraffes, buffalo, and possibly African wild dogs in remote zones. The vastness of the park ensures a true sense of wilderness with long stretches of uninterrupted nature.
After a bush breakfast or mid-morning drive, you begin your return journey to Dar es Salaam, arriving in the evening and marking the end of your southern Tanzania road safari circuit.
