5 Days Mikumi. Nyerere (Selous), Ruaha National Park Safari Circuit

  • Day 1: Dar es Salaam – Drive to Mikumi National Park

Your safari begins with an early morning departure from Dar es Salaam, heading west along the southern safari route toward Mikumi National Park.

The journey passes through rural villages, roadside markets, and gradually opens into wide savannah landscapes. Upon arrival, you enter the famous Mkata floodplain, where wildlife is often visible even before reaching your lodge.

After check-in and lunch, enjoy an afternoon game drive across the open plains. Expect zebras, giraffes, elephants, wildebeests, and lions often seen resting under acacia trees.

  • Day 2: Mikumi – Drive to Nyerere National Park (Selous)

After breakfast, you depart Mikumi and travel by road toward Nyerere National Park, one of Africa’s largest protected wilderness areas.

The route takes you through changing landscapes, from open plains to woodland and river systems as you approach the Selous ecosystem.

Upon arrival at your lodge along the Rufiji River region, you settle in and later enjoy a sunset boat safari. Hippos dominate the river channels, crocodiles rest along the banks, and birdlife fills the skies with movement and sound.

  • Day 3: Full Game Drive in Nyerere (Selous)

Today is dedicated to exploring the vast wilderness of Nyerere. Early morning game drives take you through diverse habitats including floodplains, woodlands, and riverine forests.

Expect sightings of elephants in large herds, lions tracking prey, giraffes browsing acacias, buffalo moving in groups, and possibly African wild dogs in remote areas.

A picnic lunch in the bush allows you to remain deep in the park before continuing your afternoon safari until sunset.

  • Day 4: Nyerere – Drive to Ruaha National Park

After breakfast, you begin your long scenic drive toward Ruaha National Park, passing through rural Tanzania and gradually transitioning into more rugged terrain.

As you approach Ruaha, the environment becomes drier and more dramatic, with baobab trees, rocky hills, and wide open wilderness signaling your arrival.

Upon reaching your lodge or tented camp inside or near the park, you enjoy a short evening game drive introducing you to Ruaha’s predator-rich ecosystem.

  • Day 5: Full Safari Experience in Ruaha – Return Journey

Your final day begins with an early morning game drive in Ruaha National Park, Tanzania’s largest and most remote wilderness.

The park is known for its strong predator populations, including lions, leopards, and African wild dogs. Massive elephant herds and buffalo groups are also commonly seen across the dry river systems.

After a bush breakfast or mid-morning game drive, you begin your return journey to Dar es Salaam, marking the end of your southern Tanzania safari circuit.
