Day 1: Zanzibar – Ferry or Flight to Dar es Salaam – Drive to Nyerere National Park
Your safari begins in Zanzibar, where you take an early morning flight or ferry to Dar es Salaam. Upon arrival, your safari guide meets you and you immediately begin the drive toward Nyerere National Park (Selous).
The journey moves from urban coastline into rural villages and vast miombo woodlands before reaching the wilderness zone. Upon arrival at your lodge near the Rufiji River, you check in and relax.
In the evening, enjoy your first safari experience: a sunset boat safari. The river is alive with hippos, crocodiles, and abundant birdlife, while elephants are often seen along the riverbanks at dusk.
Day 2: Full Game Drive in Nyerere (Selous)
Today is dedicated to exploring the vast wilderness of Nyerere National Park, one of Africa’s largest protected areas.
Early morning game drives take you through diverse habitats including open plains, wetlands, and dense bush. Expect sightings of elephants in large herds, lions resting under acacia trees, giraffes browsing, buffalo groups crossing tracks, and possibly African wild dogs in remote areas.
A picnic lunch in the bush allows you to remain deep inside the park before continuing your afternoon game drive until sunset.
Day 3: Nyerere – Drive to Mikumi National Park
After breakfast, you depart Nyerere and travel by road toward Mikumi National Park, passing through scenic southern Tanzania landscapes, villages, and open countryside.
Upon arrival, you enter the famous Mkata floodplain, where wildlife is often visible immediately. After check-in and rest, enjoy an afternoon game drive.
Zebras, giraffes, elephants, wildebeests, and lions are commonly seen across the open plains, making Mikumi ideal for relaxed and high-visibility wildlife viewing.
Day 4: Full-Day Safari in Mikumi – Return to Dar es Salaam
Today is a full exploration of Mikumi National Park. Early morning game drives take you across vast savannahs where animals gather around seasonal water sources.
You may encounter elephants crossing the road, lions scanning the plains, hyenas moving through grasslands, and large herds of antelope spread across the horizon.
After a bush lunch or picnic break, you begin your return drive to Dar es Salaam, arriving in the evening for an overnight stay or connecting transfer.
Day 5: Dar es Salaam – Return to Zanzibar
After breakfast, you take a ferry or domestic flight back to Zanzibar, marking the end of your short but diverse Tanzania safari adventure.
You return with memories of river safaris, vast savannah game drives, and the unique contrast between island life and mainland wilderness.
