6 Days Fly-In & Road Safari: Ruaha, Nyerere (Selous), Udzungwa Circuit

Day 1: Zanzibar / Dar es Salaam – Fly to Ruaha National Park
Your adventure begins with a morning bush flight from Zanzibar or Dar es Salaam into Ruaha National Park, Tanzania’s largest and most remote wilderness.
As you descend, endless baobab-studded plains and dry river valleys stretch beneath you. Upon arrival, you are transferred to your lodge deep inside the park.
After lunch and relaxation, enjoy your first afternoon game drive. Ruaha introduces you to its raw ecosystem elephants moving in large herds, lions resting under ancient baobabs, and antelope scattered across golden savannahs.
Day 2: Full-Day Safari in Ruaha Wilderness
Today is a deep exploration of Ruaha’s untouched landscapes. Morning and afternoon game drives take you through vast, low-traffic wilderness areas where wildlife roams freely.
Ruaha is famous for its strong predator populations, including lions, leopards, and African wild dogs. Large buffalo herds and elephants dominate the dry river systems.
A bush picnic lunch allows you to stay inside the park all day, maximizing wildlife encounters and photography opportunities.
Day 3: Ruaha – Fly to Nyerere National Park (Selous)
After breakfast, you take a scenic bush flight from Ruaha to Nyerere National Park, one of Africa’s largest protected ecosystems.
Upon arrival, you are transferred to your lodge along the Rufiji River basin. After lunch, enjoy a sunset boat safari.
The river experience reveals hippos in pods, crocodiles resting along sandbanks, and abundant birdlife including fish eagles, herons, and kingfishers. Elephants are often seen drinking along the river edges at sunset.
Day 4: Full Game Drive in Nyerere (Selous)
Today is dedicated to exploring the vast wilderness of Nyerere. Early morning game drives take you through diverse habitats including open plains, swamp areas, and dense woodlands.
Expect encounters with elephants, lions, giraffes, buffalo, and possibly African wild dogs if lucky. The park’s immense size ensures long, uninterrupted drives with very few other vehicles.
A picnic lunch in the bush keeps you immersed in nature before continuing your afternoon safari until sunset.
Day 5: Nyerere – Drive to Udzungwa Mountains National Park
After breakfast, you begin your scenic road transfer toward the Udzungwa Mountains, passing through rural landscapes, forests, and small towns along the southern corridor.
As you approach Udzungwa, the environment shifts dramatically from dry bushland to lush rainforest and mist-covered mountains.
Upon arrival, you check into your lodge near the forest edge. The afternoon is free for rest or short nature walks around the lodge area.
Day 6: Udzungwa Waterfalls Trek – Return to Dar es Salaam / Zanzibar
Early morning begins with a guided hike into Udzungwa Mountains National Park, one of Tanzania’s richest biodiversity hotspots.
The trail takes you through dense rainforest filled with endemic species, monkeys, and exotic birds. The highlight is the spectacular Sanje Waterfalls, where cascading water drops into natural forest pools.
After the trek, you begin your return journey by road to Dar es Salaam, or onward transfer to Zanzibar, marking the end of your fly-in and overland safari circuit.
