8 Days Mikumi – Udzungwa Mountains – Ruaha National Park Safari Circuit

Day 1: Dar es Salaam – Drive to Mikumi National Park
Your journey begins with an early morning departure from Dar es Salaam, heading west toward Mikumi National Park. The road passes through rural villages, roadside markets, and gradually opens into wide savannah landscapes.
Upon arrival, you enter Mikumi’s famous Mkata floodplain, where wildlife is often visible even near the park entrance. After check-in and lunch at your lodge or tented camp, you head out for an afternoon game drive.
Expect sightings of zebras, giraffes, elephants, wildebeests, and possibly lions resting under acacia trees. The open terrain allows for excellent photography and wide-angle wildlife viewing before returning to your lodge at sunset.
Day 2: Full-Day Safari in Mikumi Plains
Today is dedicated to exploring the full diversity of Mikumi National Park. Early morning game drives take you across the expansive savannah where large herds gather around water sources.
You may encounter elephants crossing the road, lions scanning the plains, and hyenas moving quietly through the grasslands. The park’s accessibility makes wildlife encounters frequent and visually rewarding.
A picnic lunch is served inside the park, allowing you to remain immersed in the wilderness throughout the day. In the afternoon, continue exploring deeper areas of the Mkata floodplain before returning to camp at sunset.
Day 3: Mikumi – Transfer to Udzungwa Mountains National Park
After breakfast, you drive south toward the Udzungwa Mountains, part of the Eastern Arc Mountain range known for its rich biodiversity and rainforest ecosystems.
As you approach Udzungwa, the landscape changes dramatically from dry savannah to lush green forests, mist-covered hills, and flowing rivers. Upon arrival, you check into your lodge near the forest edge.
The afternoon is for relaxation, nature walks around the lodge area, or preparation for the next day’s hike into the mountains.
Day 4: Udzungwa Waterfalls Trekking Experience
Today is a full trekking adventure into Udzungwa Mountains National Park, one of Tanzania’s most unique biodiversity hotspots.
Accompanied by a local ranger, you hike through dense rainforest filled with endemic plant species, monkeys, and exotic birdlife. The trail leads you to the spectacular Sanje Waterfalls, where water cascades down multiple tiers into a forest basin.
You can swim in natural pools beneath the falls and enjoy panoramic views of the Kilombero Valley from the top viewpoints. This experience combines physical activity, nature immersion, and breathtaking scenery.
Return to your lodge in the afternoon for rest and overnight stay.
Day 5: Udzungwa – Travel to Ruaha National Park
After breakfast, you begin your journey toward Ruaha National Park, Tanzania’s largest and most remote wilderness area. The drive or flight transitions through changing landscapes, from green mountains to dry baobab valleys and open savannah.
Upon arrival in Ruaha, you are transferred to your lodge deep inside the park. The vast silence and untouched wilderness immediately set a different tone from previous destinations.
In the evening, enjoy a short introductory game drive, often featuring elephants, antelopes, and predators beginning their nightly movements.
Day 6: Full-Day Safari in Ruaha Wilderness
Today is a deep exploration of Ruaha’s raw and untouched ecosystem. Morning and afternoon game drives take you across rugged terrain dominated by baobab trees, rocky outcrops, and dry riverbeds.
Ruaha is famous for its large predator population, including lions, leopards, and African wild dogs. You may also encounter massive elephant herds and buffalo groups moving through the bush.
The park’s isolation ensures long stretches without other vehicles, creating an authentic and uninterrupted safari experience. A bush picnic lunch keeps you deep inside the wilderness throughout the day.
Day 7: Walking Safari + Cultural Experience in Ruaha
This day offers a slower and more intimate connection with nature. A guided walking safari introduces you to the smaller details of the ecosystem animal tracks, bird calls, plant uses, and survival techniques in the wild.
The experience enhances your understanding of how the entire ecosystem functions beyond just large wildlife sightings.
Depending on timing, you may also visit a nearby community to learn about traditional lifestyles, livestock keeping, and coexistence with wildlife in remote Tanzania.
Evening relaxation at the lodge with sunset views over baobab-studded landscapes.
Day 8: Ruaha – Return to Dar es Salaam / Zanzibar
After an early morning breakfast and optional short game drive, you begin your return journey to Dar es Salaam by air or road connection, or onward transfer to Zanzibar depending on your travel plan.
This marks the end of a diverse safari experience that has taken you through savannah plains, mountain rainforests, and deep wilderness ecosystems in one seamless journey.
